Over the past 10 days, 21 children with cancer have been evacuated from Gaza to hospitals in Egypt and Jordan, according to doctors involved in the effort. But at least 30 other young cancer patients have not made it out, and aid workers said that in the chaos of war, they can no longer reach some of the families. Even before the hospital closed, critically ill patients were being sent home through violent streets or transferred to Al-Shifa, a nearby hospital that is under siege by Israeli forces. Hamas and hospital officials have denied the allegations.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Gaza’s Shifa Hospital has become the focus of a dayslong stalemate in Israel’s war against the Hamas militant group. But Israel claims the facility also is used by Hamas for military purposes. Throughout the war, Israel has released photos and video footage showing what it says are weapons and other military installations inside or next to mosques, schools and hospitals. The hospital ran out of fuel last week, and Israel had ordered people to leave as it conducts its ground offensive. Israel released a video of what it said was a captured militant answering questions during an interrogation.

APOPKA, Fla. (AP) — An 11-year-old who is accused of taking a gun from his mother's vehicle and shooting two teens following an argument at football practice will remain in custody for three more weeks, a judge in Florida ruled Wednesday. The child began sobbing after the judge ruled against a request for home detention, Orlando television stations reported. But he told WESH-TV in Orlando that the shooting stemmed from bullying, a scenario supported by a police report. Surveillance video showed one of the victims chasing the 11-year-old before the shooting, according to an arrest affidavit. The mother told detectives she didn't see her son grab the gun, which she said had been stored in a gun box underneath the front passenger seat.

A teenager's skull bone was placed in her abdomen to preserve it after surgery. Chelsey Smith was 15 when she got in a life-threatening car crash that caused her brain to swell. To save Smith's life, consultant pediatric neurosurgeon Roddy O'Kane removed the bone under Smith's forehead to give her brain space to swell. To keep it healthy, the surgeon implanted part of Smith's skull in her abdomen, just under her skin. While the idea of keeping the skull bone in the abdomen is fairly new, the idea of drilling a hole in the skull to relieve the pressure in the skull is not.
